How long does it take to learn Turkish?

Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? Have you ever wondered "How cool would it be if I became bilingual, or perhaps even trilingual!". I'm not actually waiting for the answer, because I know you did. And I know for a fact that you’ve googled the exact question "How long does it take to learn a new language?". Well, this article is here to help you answer this question, and more specifically, it will clarify how hard Turkish is to learn.

How long does it take to learn a new language?

Alright. You know it's extremely hard to answer such a question right? If you insist on an answer, I'd say anywhere between 3 months and 3 years. Well I told you it's not an easy answer!

The right answer is : It depends.

Factors playing a role on learning a new language

1-Your mother tongue

The language you grew up speaking can deeply affect the period needed for you to learn a new language. Okay, okay... I will explain. Let's say we have two people: John, an American citizen, grew up speaking English... And Jung, a Korean citizen who grew up speaking Korean. John and Jung decided to sign up for a Japanese language course. Who do you think will learn it faster? Well Duh! Of course Jung will learn it way faster due to the similarities between the two languages.

2-The number of languages you can speak

Yep. Knowing more languages means that you are getting used to how grammars work. Because learning a new language isn't about memorizing all the words of that language, it's about being able to analyse why and when this rule applies and where. Knowing multiple languages means that your mind has been exposed to more possibilities hence taking you a step closer to learn a new language.

3-The language itself

Well, some languages are just a puzzle that you need to figure out how to solve; other languages can be extremely complicated. Taking this into consideration, the period needed for learning a foreign language will be different for each language.

"Alright enough, I don't care about all of this, can you just tell me how long will it take me to learn Turkish?", you say?

Sheesh, someone's short tempered. Okay, I'll get to the point.

How long does it take to learn Turkish?

I’d say between 4 to 6 months with the right programs and the right tutoring. This is considered an extremely short period of time to learn a new language, but the reason I’m confident is because of how impeccable our website is. Turacoon is one of the best ways you can learn Turkish, it provides you with private lessons with professional tutors. And as a foreigner in Turkey who has learned the language recently myself, I can assure you that practicing and speaking is the most crucial and effective part in learning Turkish.

Also, Turkish is a relatively easy language to learn.

First of all, Turkish alphabet is a Latin-script alphabet. Knowing the alphabet is the one of the most important steps in learning a foreign language. Of course, some of the letters are pronounced differently, but it's no big deal. Here are some of the reasons why Turkish is not as hard as you think:

1-You pronounce exactly what's written

I don't know if you've ever tried to read French before, but if you have, you'll know that it's a pain in the, you know, eyes. Some of the words can have up to 6 silent letters, and when you think you know how to pronounce certain words, the pronunciation could change according to the sentence! Some letters are pronounced differently according to the letters before and after! A linguistic nightmare (sorry for all the Francophones out there).

But the good news is, you don't have to worry about this while learning the Turkish language! Yay!

Turkish words are pronounced exactly the way they’re written, not a letter more, not a letter less. So if you learn how to pronounce the letters in the alphabet then congratulations! You can read Turkish now.

2-It’s a Rubik’s Cube

I know, you might think “How could something similar to a Rubik’s Cube possibly be easy?”. Well, have you ever tried to learn how to solve the Rubik’s Cube? It’s actually extremely simple if you use one of the algorithms! Once you learn it, you can solve it no matter how messed up it is. Turkish grammar is exactly like this, you learn what to add to the verb and done! For example, when you want a verb in past tense you just add “dI” as a suffix, if you want it in future tense you just add “AcAk”. And the good news is that these are applicable on every single verb in the Turkish language!

3-The Vocabulary is a mixture of foreign languages

People may think that Arabic and Turkish have a lot of common words, and while this is not completely wrong, the Turkish language contains vocabulary from a wide range of foreign languages as well. For instance, if you know Turkish you’ve definitely noticed how many French words it contains. Arabic and Persian words are also common in the Turkish language.

Summary

The Turkish language is beautiful and euphonious. So, now that you know how easy it is to learn Turkish, I’m pretty sure that you’re excited more than ever to learn Turkish, and at Turacoon we’re here to provide you with the right tutoring so that you can achieve your ambitions in the shortest , most effective and fun way!
